Whats new in Office 2016

Whats new in Office 2016 ?

Improved Dark Theme and Ribbon Tab Text

Pick the Office theme that’s right for you. The Dark Gray theme provides a high contrast look and feel that is easy on the eyes. The Colorful theme offers a modern and fresh look. The White theme provides a traditional Office look

The light theme that’s been available in Office may be unusable for some users. For those of you that really don’t like the light theme or simply can’t use it, Office 2016 introduces improvements to the Dark theme that makes it easier to use the interface, including better readability in Word’s navigation pane and several Outlook readability fixes (white text on light background, dark text on dark background, and disabled text being unreadable).

The ribbon tab text is no longer in all caps and hover states on the ribbon tabs have been added.

Smart lookup

Fact-check or explore terms in your documents with Bing-powered Smart Lookup. Simply highlight terms in your document and use this feature to bring in search results from the web right into your reading or authoring environment.

“Smart Lookup” is already available in Word and Outlook, and now it’s been added to Excel and PowerPoint. This feature is also called “Insights from Bing” and helps you learn more about your content by gathering and displaying precisely the right information in the context of what you are reading or writing about. The information is gathered from a variety of sources like Bing Snapshot, Wikipedia, Bing image search, and Oxford dictionary, allowing you to do anything from a quick look up to a detailed exploration without leaving the Office app. Insights can be accessed by right clicking a word or phrase, through the Review tab on the ribbon, or via the “Tell Me” box (which we discuss in the next section). Insights is powered by Bing and uses the selected text and some surrounding content to get contextually relevant results.

Insights can be accessed by selecting a word or phrase and right-clicking on it, through the Review tab on the ribbon, or by using the “Tell Me” box. Insights uses the selected text and some surrounding content to get results that are contextually relevant and links and artwork that you can use to enhance your Office document.

Tell me – Natural Language Query

Simply type what you want to do in the app using your own words, and then Tell Me will guide through the process as well as offer additional resources.

For most of us, there a lot of features and commands in Office that we never use. Sometimes it’s simply because we have trouble finding the tools we need. To solve this problem, Microsoft added the “Tell Me” feature, which first appeared in the Office Online suite, to Office 2016. The “Tell Me” feature uses natural language to help you find what you’re looking for. The “Tell Me” box sits inconspicuously to the right of the tabs on the ribbon bar in all the apps in the suite, except for Publisher, OneNote, and Skype.

Quick Shape Formatting

Take advantage of the many redesigned shapes that are now available. In Visio Professional, the Basic Electrical template now has shapes that are compliant with the IEEE standard. In Visio Standard, the Office Layout shapes have been updated. Also check out the Starter diagrams to quickly get going.

This feature increases the number of default shape styles by introducing new “preset” styles in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Once you draw a shape in your document, you can apply a new preset style to the shape.

Real-time Document Collaboration

Google Docs users have been enjoying real-time collaboration for years. However, Microsoft has finally caught up and improved real-time collaboration in the core apps in Office 2016. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now make it easy to have multiple people editing the same document, whether they are using Office Online or the desktop Office apps.

Improved backstage

The Backstage screen received an update that makes saving, opening, and browsing for files easier and faster. The “Recent” files list is now categorized by document modification date and the “Browse” button has been elevated for improved visibility and now provides quicker access to the File Explorer.

Convert Handwritten Equation to Text

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now include a new feature called “Ink Equation” which allows you to insert mathematical equations by handwriting them using a mouse, a digital pen, or even your finger on touch-enabled devices.

Modern Attachments in Outlook

Attach a document from your recent items and share them from OneDrive or SharePoint with email recipients. Also configure sharing permissions so that all the recipients have access to the attached file without having to leave the app.

Outlook 2016 has gotten some love as well. Attaching files is now easier and more intuitive. Now, when you click the “Attach” button to attach a file to the current email, you’ll see a list of recently worked on files, both locally and on OneDrive. This can be very useful considering the file you want to attach is probably one you’ve accessed or been working on recently. The list also includes options to browse your PC or web locations if the file you want is not on the “Recent Items” list.

There are many other new features and improvements in Office 2016, such an improved grammar checker, third-party plug-in integration, security and management enhancements, and new modern charts and other improved business intelligence tools in Excel. Real-time collaboration improvements and interface changes, such as the modern attachments in Outlook and the improved backstage view, are the most significant changes, making Office more efficient and allowing you to be more productive.

Skype Integration

Use Skype to check in and collaborate with someone using Instant Messaging (IM), voice, video, or screen sharing. Also join online meetings while on the go using the Skype for Business mobile app. See who is online, IM meeting participants, and follow along when a presenter shares his screen – all from your tablet or phone

Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 3 – Generation 3 carbon

Hi all,

just a quick note to tell you about the new Lenovo X1 Carbons we have in the shop – from the outset, other than the processor being the “5th generation” intel processors, not much has changed except for the function key strip across the top which has changed from the adaptive LCD type, press and cycle through functions (which I thought was really cool) to the multi purpose keys that have different purposes in combination with the Fn key.

Using functions keys myself (we use as much Linus around here as windows) is a real issue but fixed through BIOS where you can change the default button functionality on boot.
All in all, there is really little difference in the Gen 2 versus the Gen 3 – estheically identical in almost all things that matter.

Still a great machine though and lots of very cool customer reviews.

Lenovo Thinkpad, Linux, Ubuntu, Debian – T440, X1 Carbon

Hi Team,

we’ve had an interesting October so far with lots of customers buying Lenovo thinkpad T440p, X1 Carbons – however, wanting Ubuntu installed and running on the Lenovo units.

In all Lenovo cases, Ubuntu installed effortlessly and was up and running with no driver injections.

Outside of some small issues with ACPI in the command line when booting (particularly for T440p) – no issues on install at all.

Of particular interest is how to load the Windows 8 or Windows 7 into a virtualbox guest so you can still access  the original Win 8 license.  Best way we’ve found is to

1> take a backup of the unit – bare metal preferred – using Acronis or Ghost or

2> Load Linux and install the desired version of linux,

3> Install Vmware player or Virtualbox  (search for install vmware player or Virtualbox on Ubuntu – lots of very good sites which i wont duplicate here

4> setup the guest, nothing special there – you mighty have to tweak it/install supporting packages for 64 bit versions, but search for that too.

5> boot into acronis or whatever you used for backup

6> restore and thats it…

Microsoft Office 365 Comparison guide

Notebooksrus presents Microsoft Office 365 Comparison guide.

In general, most business greater than 25 seats should not be looking at any of these products and should, instead, get a quote from US for an enterprise solution. Office licenses are not transferable so if you buy a small business premium (for example), you cannot switch it over to the enterprise product.

Lenovo Online Shop – What are Differences ?

Notebooksrus or Lenovo Online Shop – what are differences ?

Lots of customers call continually and ask what the Difference is with Lenovo online store/shop and Notebooks R Us as a Premium Business partner?

Main differences:
1> You get you new purchase same day or next business day – Lenovo Online Shop  is 7 days minimum and (in some cases) weeks.
2> The online store gives a base model (and very cheap pricing) then once configured up to normal specs, is ALWAYS more then our pricing
3> the Lenovo online shop is geared to home users – you will see models with Windows 8 Standard and 1 year warranty – please see below for why this is important!

4> Models online are only 1 year warranty as standard, you need to configure it to 3 years. All “off the shelf” models in Australia from X1 Carbon to T-Series are all 3 year warranty as standard. So configure it to 3 years and it automatically adds something like $250 to the price.

5> All out models come with Win 8 pro so you get the downgrade rights for a windoes 7 pro license. Windows 8 Standard DOES NOT have downgrade rights to windows 7 – so two things are automatically a problem, firstly you need to buy a windows 7 license ($140-$290) depending on version home/pro. Then you need to do the downgrade which we do for free. This process can take quite a long time and can result in an unworking system.

6> We give you the media for Win7 and win8 – you need to buy the media separately with Lenovo Online Shop

7> And most important – we give lifetime support for our customers for all units – HP, Lenovo, Toshiba etc, seeing as we sell so many of these units, we know everything about them – which one is right for you – what are the upgrade options – what others say etc. So you should feel very confident that you are walking away with the perfect unit to meet your needs.

8> also – we have them on display.

So Lenovo Online Shop might quote (this is from their website):

X1 Carbon, I7, Touch, 4G LTE, 8G Ram, 256GB Solid State, WQHD (2560 x 1440)
Add 3 years warranty
Add win 8 pro

Total : $ 2942. off Lenovo shop online site and get it in 3 weeks, and downgrade it yourself…….

Our price: same unit : $2549 inc Gst…. saving $393 and getting it next day.

Just ask for a quote and see for yourself. We can almost always beat the Lenovo Shop Online.

Regs, Dave

Windows 8 to Windows 7 downgrade

So you don’t like Win 8 – well there is a solution for Win 8 Pro users, you can downgrade to win 7 pro. It’s a little tricky and you’ll need some bits and bobs but you can do it.

1> how “new” your machine is will dictate if there are drivers available to run windows 7. For instance, many of the TOUCH screens have specific drivers for Windows 8 only. Conversely, the Driver and Application compatibility issues is what is causing people to move back to win 7.

2> You will need Windows 8 pro (see below downgrade rights overview) – if you have win8 Standard then you will have to upgrade first before you downgrade (which is not a painful process)

3> this will delete the hard disk *that is you will need to reformat) – also may require to delete the recovery partition 🙁

4> this is NOT an ONLINE upgrade so you will need some things before you start

What will you need:
1> A windows 7 disk – you will need something to install Windows with – you can “find” a copy online somewhere – just burn it to disc – we are not after pirate software here, you will need a legitimate key to get it going, we’re just after the install media.

2> You will also need a Win 7 KEY – any key will do as you will be replacing this once you activate the software – you will be calling Microsoft for a MANUAL activation wherein you will need to supply the Win 8 key.

And obviously BEFORE you start, go to the manufacturer website and download all the drivers you will need – in particular any WIFI drivers or LAN drivers (so you can access the net to update)

SO Lets begin.

Step Zero:  Preparation is KEY!

Backup all your data onto a separate drive – any documents photos etc will be DESTROYED by this process – remember you are reformating the disk and reinstalling windows.

Also – get a Key extractor program to obtain all the keys for any installed products you have – (Ms Office, Adobe or anything else you might have installed)

Please make sure you’ve done Step Zero first!!!

Obtain genuine Windows media and a corresponding product key for the version of Windows that is eligible for downgrade.

  • The media should come from a prior legally licensed version from the OEM or retail channels.
  • Qualified OEMs have the option to distribute downgrade media and product keys directly to end users, per end user request.
  • End users who are licensed separately through Microsoft Volume Licensing (VL) may provide their VL media and key to a system builder to facilitate the downgrade on their own systems.

Insert the Windows 7 media in the CD drive and follow the installation instructions.

Note, if this doesn’t work/Boot then you *may* need to change BIOS setting to disable UEFI and try booting again, Also try changing the BIOS settings for the SATA controller so it will recognise the CD drive – once you can “see” it in the boot options, you should be good to go.
Type the product key – not this is the product key from an EXISTING windows 7 machine, we are trying to get past the install only, not the Activation part – this will come later.

Step 3:

It’s probably a good time to install the Drivers for the network so we can activate the product.

So get the wireless network or LAN up and running.

Step 4:

Once completely installed, If the software was previously activated, you will not be able to activate it online.

In this case, Choose to “Activate by Phone” and the screen will display the appropriate local Activation Support phone number

Call the support number and (press the key for a representative – rather than type the Numbers given) then explain the circumstance that you are downgrading an eligible version of Win 8 pro to Win 7

When it is determined that the end user has an eligible Windows license, the customer service representative will provide a single-use activation code to activate the software. Please note that Microsoft does not provide a full product key in this scenario.
Activate the software.

Step 5:

thats it – now you will need to install/update the software and drivers.

Step 6:

Copy your data back, you will obviously need to reinstall everything you once had…

Ta da!

From Microsoft OEM website – know Downgrade rights overview

Downgrade rights are an end-user right, documented in the Software License Terms that customers accept upon first running Windows software. Thanks to downgrade rights, end users who have acquired a more recent version of the software (such as Windows 8 Pro) can use a prior version of the software (such as Windows 7 Professional) until they are ready to move to the more recent version. Not all products include downgrade rights. But if a product includes downgrade rights, the license terms for that product will indicate which prior versions of the software may be used.
Downgrade rights for Windows software

The following OEM versions of Windows software are eligible for downgrade rights.
Windows 8 Windows 7
Windows 8 Pro includes downgrade rights to:

Windows 7 Professional
Windows Vista Business
